handwriting

For about the first 2X years of our life we wrote nothing but the letters found in the English language with the occasional accent mark and tilde. Then we went to Thailand and wrote a great deal of Thai letters. Then we dabbled in some Chinese characters and still wrote some Thai before moving to Japan. Now, in Japan there is no question that, by hand, we write almost exclusively in any three of the Japanese scripts. Only when we study do we really ever write in English, and even then it is only a small percentage of our writing.

Today we hit on this question: After writing in the script of (an)other languages, does your original handwriting change?

We don't have any pre-Japan samples with us to compare to. Of course, we want to say it does because it sounds cool - and sometimes we think it has. We think over time it would, as you give up your old habits in order to properly form characters that have similar attributes to English letters, and stop doing "g" and "y" type moves.

But, it's entirely possible that it'll never change. That with some practice to break off the rust, we'd be back where we once were.

Just a thought. We wrote "help" today and it didn't look like our usual and that brought us to the computer. Now, it's time to study again.

Steaks

While waiting for our food at Steak n' Shake, Katherine wrote out 10 hiragana characters for me to copy. I wrote them out 12 times each or so and it felt just like when you're in 1st grade learning letters!

And to provide my personal answer to your question, my handwriting sucks just as bad in hiragana as it does in English :P

Re: Steaks

ganbare!

We actually have some of our first writing, we are making improvements each day. But yeah, it's still messy, but only because my handwriting period is messy.

I think its possible for handwriting to change over time whether you're studying another language or not. Mine seems to go through phases but then its still easily recognizable as my handwriting. My own writing might actually have regressed over the years since I'm so accustomed to the computer now. I won't write unless its for taking notes in class, and then its riddled with weird mistakes such as writing "b" for "p" and also the reverse of that.

I bet your handwriting has changed, especially if you noticed it enough to think on it. But it will probably always have your own unique style unless you purposely work on changing that.

Strangely, I made a comment, but it seems to have disappeared. Second time this morning. Gah!
